5 Things Friday
November already, so it's all about the layers, plus my new favourite accessory, what I've been watching and the Christmas lists have begun, for me at least!
If you were expecting to see me in my knickers this morning, then apologies! Don’t worry though, I have that delight all written up and it will be in your inbox this Sunday. Truth is I got cold feet and decided that only paid subscribers would have the joy of seeing me review shapewear, plus it feels like we’re overdue a 5 Things roundup of what’s been on my radar recently. So this week, I have been…
1. Layering up
It’s beginning to feel more like proper autumn weather. I know I shouldn’t complain because we’ve had some gorgeous warm days in October, but it’s November and I want to start feeling cosy in chunky jumpers and get layering up my outfits. We all know autumn is the best season fashion wise, so I’m pleased to see the temperatures dipping and I’ve started to pull out a few of my favourite accessories. I’m never without a beanie hat at this time of year - hurrah for having an excuse to cover up on bad hair days, plus they are a great inexpensive way to add a little colour to an outfit.
I’ve got quite a collection, but my favourites are from New Look and Arket.
It’s got to be really cold for me to add a big scarf and I often feel like wearing both can feel too bulky, so I’m keen to try the knitted neckties that are becoming a cool accessory.
I love Caroline's look (colour-matching aspects of her outfit) and Sarah and Shelley show how to add my favourite colour pop to their looks. I’ve ordered one from eBay to try here. There are lots on Esty and I’m waiting for the next drop from Lucky Stitch, who was recently featured in The Guardian. So, if your winter coat is looking a bit plain, maybe a knitted necktie is the answer.
2. Watching the screen (big and small)
Two really good films and it’s not often I say that. Is it me or is the film offering not that good anymore? You have to watch a lot of dross to get a goodie, but this week I managed a cinema visit and a couple of hours in front of the box and can recommend both. We visited our local Everyman Cinema and watched Hugh Grant in Heretic. Described as a religious horror, this film is just my sort of scary, with lots of suspense, chilling looks and pensive silences and unusually for a horror, it has an excellent plot. But can we talk about Hugh Grant, who was excellent in the film? I love it when someone has a second wind of success, especially in the latter half of life. Now Hugh has dropped the cheeky English fop act - although if you remember the Liz Hurley days, was that an act? - he is showing his acting ability in a range of roles. If you missed A Very British Scandal, you can still catch it on BBC iPlayer. He was superb as British politician Jeremy Thorpe.
Talking of second careers, Anna Kendrick makes her directorial debut and takes on the female lead in Woman of the Hour, which you can catch on Netflix now. Based on the true story of serial killer Rodney Alcala and his appearance on a 1970s dating show, it shows how Rodney’s charm helped him evade detection for 20 years. Kendrick, who you’ll probably recognise (particularly if you have older teenagers) from Pitch Perfect, stars opposite Daniel Zovatto, as the sinister Alcala, her game show date. The film is pretty gritty, but the acting is excellent and the social commentary on the misogynistic, male-dominated entertainment industry through the eyes of Kendrick, is as painful to watch as it is compelling.
