Have you checked the weather? It’s time to start thinking of something other than jeans to wear - yes it’s beginning to heat up! Personally, I’ve been looking for something to replace my daily uniform of jeans and a sweater for a while, and skirts are firmly on my radar. At one time, summer used to signal the time to get the dresses out, but nothing is floating my boat in that department, whereas skirts seem modern and fresh. I’ve bought two in the last few weeks - this lace TU one and the Monsoon utility one (size medium) - and have worn both several times. Having had compliments on both, I’m pleased with my purchases. So what styles am I including in my summer wardrobe?

1. The Cotton Midi Skirt

The cotton midi skirt (aka the skirt workhorse in your wardrobe) is so versatile for everyday casual looks, but can also be dressed up for a night out. Last year, I bought three in my favourite neutrals (white, black and navy) and they became the most worn items in my summer wardrobe, at home and on holiday. My white skirt got far more wear than I predicted, but a navy one is a great staple, suits everyone and feels right even on those not so sunny days.

The Cotton Midi Look

For a casual look, this Seasalt cotton midi skirt is perfect. The elastic waist and pockets tick the boxes for all my comfy essentials. A Cos striped tee and my go-to summer denim jacket keep it practical and I'm adding some colour with this stripey tote (the perfect carry all), some Mary Janes (these are the John Lewis ones and they are so comfortable) and my favourite summer nail colour.

2. The Pleated Skirt

A pleated skirt (this Mango one is perfect) is a long-time basic in my wardrobe and one which I’m happy to see is still looking modern and relevant. Perfect for the office with loafers, easy to dress down with trainers, but also great for nights out with some kitten heels - basically it’s versatile! I think you can be put off this style if you're pear-shaped or fear it will look frumpy. The key is to wear light fluid fabrics, so the pleats drape well, and go for a longer length to avoid a mumsy look.

The Pleated Skirt Look

You know I love a co-ord, and this brown Hush one would be a lovely addition for holidays. Change up the top on cooler days or add a little jacket. Team with a leopard print scarf to add some interest, comfy sandals for day tripping and, of course, your summer basket. I’ve carried the pop of red theme on with my favourite Sezanne earrings.
