5 Things Friday - Let's Wrap Up!
The temperatures have dropped, it's time to get the layers out and bring on your deep winter style.
After weeks of fairly mild weather, I’m actually excited that the temperature has dropped a notch or two in the UK and we can finally think about woolly jumpers and puffer coats. I’ve escaped for a few days to Prague, so keeping warm and cosy is essential, but of course I want to keep it stylish! It's tricky though, to style all those layers and not end up looking like a stuffed sausage. So how to look more Cameron and less Bridget in your winter layers?
1. Where To Start… building the right bases.
The most important layer to your outfit, and one that will ensure that you stay toasty, is your base layer, so it’s worth spending some of your pennies on quality items. I went to Iceland in January and, despite the howling winds and a rather scary snowstorm, I stayed warm and cosy, largely down to my gorgeous base tops from Cos. Made from Merino, they’re super light, don’t add bulk and have handy thumb holes so your hands stay warm but you look cool!
It’s tempting to stay with the neutrals, (H&M does a great Thermolite range with your bases), but I love the bright reds or deep greens and why not make them a part of your outfit? Cameron rocks a nice rollneck but, if you prefer a crew neck, then I can recommend the Arket Merino knits too.
2. Dressing the bottom half… leggings or leather?
So, I actually think the bottom half is probably the most tricky when trying to keep warm! Layering bases on your legs can give even more of a stuffed sausage impression, unless you're blessed with slim pins! If the temperatures are really dropping then jeans or wide leg trousers are unlikely to keep you cosy, unless you wear some thermal tights underneath. M&S are my favourites; they don’t add bulk, unlike fleece-lined ones, but still give lots of warmth. I’m not a big advocate of leggings, except for dog walks, but when it’s chilly outside, I do think they can give a chic look. It’s all about wearing your layers loose and long if, like me, you’ve neglected your sumo squats of late.
I’ve recently gone for this M&S pair, which I’ll be layering with my long H&M zip up and puffer coat. Another look I like is leather trousers. I often wear mine for winter outfits. A jogger loose-style pair, like these Mango faux ones, can be really useful and they are good for layering some thermal tights under.
