5 Things Friday - So what are we wearing to dinner?
Or on a date night, girls' weekend, or any other evening when we are not heading for the sofa, for that matter?
Nights out seem to come along like buses! After all the sparkly Christmas dos, I’ve enjoyed a few weeks of Friday nights in my pjs, snoozing on the sofa - and very welcome it has been too. Then, all of a sudden, within the last two weeks, I’ve had 3 meals out with girlfriends, a date night with the husband (of course!) and now a girls’ weekend coming up! You know me, I like an opportunity to dress up, even if it’s only adding one item to my outfit to make it look a little more elevated, but what to wear now party season is over? Fear not, I’ve come up with five looks that you can wear for all those little occasions; I’m not talking BIG dos, more the every day night outs that can have you messaging, “What’s everyone wearing?”.
1. A Boucle Jacket
The iconic Chanel-inspired tweed jacket has been a classic item since the 1950s, and has been copied by everyone from designer brands to the high street. I chose the M&S black one (above) for a recent collaboration. The neat fit, pretty gold buttons and cosy wool blend make it perfect for a February night out. I prefer to dress it down with jeans and trainers (I’m sure you’ve got both in your wardrobe). The navy Mint Velvet would be perfect for this, but it’s a versatile piece that you could wear day/night, casually or for a smart occasion. Then, if you fancy a more statement one, this green MV jacket would look fabulous worn with either navy or black.
How to wear it - The Mango jacket is the perfect neutral version. Dress it down with a pair of indigo wash wide-leg jeans, and the cute Cos knitted top. It comes with a little silk scarf that you can detach (love anything versatile), so you can wear it with, or without and tie it to your handbag. Add a dupe Chanel broach, gold hoops, this stunning Cos structure bag, and then dress the whole look down with some trainers.
2. A Statement Top
The classic ‘jeans and a nice top’ is a standard night out look, whether you are aiming for something fairly casual (dress it down with trainers) or more statement-making (add a pair of pointy shoes). Don’t just stop at jeans; I like to mix it up a bit with cigarette-style or wide-leg trousers. The M&S black lace top would look amazing in summer with some pale jeans and black sandals; a very apt for today heart print top from &Otherstories; and the cute polka dot is another hit from M&S.
How to wear it - How stunning is the Cos red blouse? In summer, it would work perfectly with leopard-print flats or sandals with jeans. I tried the Whistles Lily cigarette pants. They’re true to size and would work so hard in your wardrobe for work and play! My favourite Whistles leather jacket is back in stock (I wear a medium). I paired it with some red nails, a Cos grab bag and a pretty heart necklace.
