5 Things Friday - The Airport Outfit
Want to arrive at your destination looking stylish, cool and comfortable? Here are my 5 must-have ingredients for your airport outfit
Happy Friday ladies, I hope you’ve all had a lovely week. It must be coming up to holiday time because I’ve had a few requests recently for advice on travel outfits. The general gist is that deciding what to wear, whether for long-haul, a train journey or just a car journey, gets us all in a bit of a style conundrum, myself included. I’ve got a long weekend travelling through Switzerland and Italy by train coming up, so rather selfishly this post is for me too! So, what to wear when we want to travel in comfort? And how do you get that practical look that does not compromise on style? I’ve broken down my essentials to nail the perfect travel outfits.
1. The Bottoms
When it comes to travelling, I’ll opt for trousers nine times out of ten. Personally, I find they’re an easy option when building an outfit, giving you more options with footwear and meaning you're not worried about bare (possibly not-yet-tanned) legs. Air conditioning on planes means you can be anything from freezing to sweating. If I’m going somewhere hot, I usually stick to a suitcase full of dresses, but a pair of lightweight trousers can come in handy for unexpected cooler evenings, or even keeping midges at bay. There are lots of choices when it comes to trousers, but ultimately we want a breathable, soft fabric that’s comfortable but not too sloppy. I’ve never travelled in jeans, but with an elastic waist and soft denim my Arket soft jeans are a strong contender. They’re mid-weight, so good if you’re leaving a chilly UK but don’t want to be too hot when you arrive. My other go-to is a linen trouser. Before you shout “but what about the creases”… linen blend is your friend. Linen blend trousers crease less, are often softer, and they’re light, so great if you’re travelling in summer. I think I bought my favourite H&M linen blend trousers in 3 colours last year; they served me well for travelling and holidays. M&S do lots of variations on soft pull-on wide leg trousers - these are great for a long flight where comfort is a priority.
1.H&M Feather soft denim is a cotton lyocell mix at a great price/ 2.Cos Cotton barrel pull-on trousers are one of my favourite shapes/ 3.Uniqlo always does great linen mix trousers/ 4.Me+Em does a fantastic travel range, including these smart cotton blend jersey ones/ 5. Uniqlo easy curve trousers (coming end of March), I have similar from last year which were my fave walking trousers; the drawstring hem is a gamechanger/6. M&S linen blend trousers always combine comfort with affordability.
