5 Things Friday - The Basics
Don't know where to start with your autumn wardrobe? Start with the basics and you'll build the best foundation for all your outfits.
Good morning and something a little different from me today. For the last few years I’ve built a core foundation for my wardrobe that I like to call The Basics. It’s a neutral base which I use as a starting point for all my outfits. It has meant that I never feel like I don’t know where to start when I’m thinking about what to wear each day. Some days I build outfits just from my basics and other times I add a trend item or some extra colour. Having good basics means that your wardrobe is versatile and works hard for you; you have items that you wear everyday but can also dress up. It also means all your wardrobe pieces work together, so you don’t make purchases that you have nothing to go with or that don’t fit in with your lifestyle. This season I’ve added some of my favourite autumn colours as well as my usual neutral palette, and I’ve thought about what clothes I need for how I’m working now. So I thought I would take a deep dive into some of my wardrobe basics with you, and explain why I choose them and why they work for me with a series of exclusive videos! So let’s get started…
1. Base Layers, T-Shirts and Sweatshirts
Good outfits start with good bases and when the weather starts to get cooler its all about layers. I keep my T-shirts out all year, so I can layer them under knits and shirts. This year I’m trying the H&M microfibre tees for layering - they’re very similar to Skims! Other good ones are Primark fitted tees and the Peacocks basics range.

2. Knitwear - Vest, Crew-Neck Jumpers and Knitted Jackets
Time to get the knitwear out (although I never put away my cashmere crew-neck jumpers). If you’re looking for a similar alternative, the Boden cotton ones are a great fit and machine washable. Add in vests, cardigans and knitted jackets, which are great for layering as a cardigan when we move towards winter.
