5 Things Friday - The Shirt Edit

The wardrobe classic is a great basic for so many looks and an all-round hardworking item. I feel like this is going to be the summer of the shirt.

As usual, I have gone over the email length so you may need to

A good shirt never goes out of fashion. They are such a wardrobe staple, but I’ve noticed that this spring in particular there are so many great offerings and they are being styled up by all the top fashion icons. So, whether it’s linen or cotton, stripes or plain, the classic white or perhaps a bright, there are some great ones out there. Here are my five favourites.

  1. The Classic White

It’s hard to think of anything more classic than a white cotton shirt. It has never gone out of fashion and each year it seems to have a little reinvention. This year, I’ve noticed them being worn loosely, always with the cuffs rolled up and unbuttoned for a cool, casual style that isn’t too try-hard.

Styling it for a night out is on my agenda. Imagine this Arket one with the sleeves rolled up, buttoned up just in the middle and styled with a recent purchase of mine, the M&S straight linen skirt. Then add the gorgeous Jill Sander heels (1/2 price but still ££) or the purse friendly &otherstories ones, a clutch and silver hoops. Voila!

2. The Linen One

There is something so summery about a linen shirt. I always take one with me on holiday; they are so useful for wearing over a vest top, throwing over your swimsuit and wearing loose over linen trousers. This year I’m liking the slightly cropped utility version. It looks slightly more structured and sits well with the maxi skirts that I have. The Cos black one (above) is a gorgeous quality linen and a perfect cropped (but not too cropped) length. I bought a medium. The M&S one has been with me on beach holidays - I wore it for my airport outfit, as a beach throw and tied it in a knot at the waist with a maxi skirt for a night out. My advice is to size up - I got a 16.

Some linen shirt holiday inspo.

Browns and oranges look so great with a tan contrasting against a white shirt. I’m tempted by that Hush swimsuit, M&S is serving up great summer bags again with this brown tote, add the strappy Air&Grace sandals and Monica Vinader's new brown bead necklace and you've got a great holiday outfit to go.
