5 Things Friday - The Style Challenge
Well, I set you a task, so it's only fair that I take part myself. This week, I'm styling up some barely-worn trousers and having fun with different looks without even having to hit the shops!
It’s nearing the end of January and with that the final stages of the big wardrobe clear out, re-organise and reassess. We’ve cleared, sorted, rejigged, given our most-loved items some TLC and last week I confessed what’s not worked for me, which I have to say I found hugely cathartic. It gave me some time to look at what I’ve bought, what’s worked and what hasn’t, and a reason to revisit some of those items and reassess my thoughts. That purple jumper is staying and I’ve been investigating having the YSL white loafers dyed to a more workable colour. So, if you’ve not had a chance to get to grips with last week’s task, I strongly advise you to give it a go! Last week I also laid down the challenge to style up an item in your wardrobe; one which you are not wearing enough (or at all) but still love and don’t want to let go! From my own declutter I discovered a pair of wide-leg trousers that I’d bought back in September that I hadn’t worn once. I’d bought them in cream the previous winter and they were worn regularly, but I had not reached for the black ones at all!

In my work life, black wide-leg trousers were a wardrobe staple so my change of circumstances was one of the issues. In my head I consider them quite smart, the sort of thing I’d wear with loafers or pointed boots and a fitted jacket/knitted cardigan, and since I’ve stopped teaching I’ve worn more casual items like jeans and cord trousers. So, in order to get my wear out of these, I knew I would have to think about styling them in a more casual way!
My first port of call for inspiration is always Pinterest. I know when I’ve mentioned it previously a few of you have asked for some help with using it, so I’ve done a quick “How To” video, which I hope you’ll find useful.
So, after a little inspiration, how did I do?
1. Trousers + Tee + Jumper + Trainers
There is no need to overthink your outfit; use what works already and just change up one thing. For me this is a classic look that I’d usually wear with jeans, but I've just swapped jeans for the trousers and I think it works.
2. Trousers + Tee + Denim Shacket + Scarf + Trainers
I love this shacket and would wear it now under a coat, then as a jacket in spring. Adding my signature colour pop red gives this outfit a little extra something, and I liked playing with the scarf over the jacket.
If you're a free or a paid subscriber please join in the challenge over on the chat thread. I’m hoping you will be inspired to have a go at styling something that’s not getting the wear it deserves in your wardrobe and, if you are, please take some pictures and share your style over on the chat. This is an opportunity to pool ideas and looks and ask any questions you have and for everyone to join in! So come on and be brave.
